A Q&A with Give a Care Disability Support Worker, Jessica A.

Describe your background, and why you became a Disability Support Worker?

My Name is Jessica, I’m 23 years old and have previously worked in Aged Care and the Mental Health Sector. My mother was a home and community care worker, and she played a big part in me knowing what I wanted to do as a career. Her stories always made me feel like I knew my path was assisting others. I’ve felt this way from a very young age and have always enjoyed being of service to others.

What do you love about being a Disability Support Worker?

I LOVE being able to build a healthy relationship with my clients. I chose Disability Support Work as it’s much less clinical and more people orientated. I am able to see someone achieve goals over time and be the best version of themselves. It’s exciting, rewarding and grounding.

Can you share a story or experience with a client that impacted you in some way?

Truthfully, what comes to my mind when I think of a story with a client that’s impacted me, the first thing I actually think of is how at a glance it’s very easy to see myself as a support worker, supporting my clients. However, my clients don’t understand how they have instead, impacted my life and supported me when I’ve had a bad, stressful or hard day. When I have had tough things happening in the background, they don’t see how their smiles, their jokes, stories, care, kindness and overall genuineness have instead supported me. I love supporting them, but it cannot go unnoticed just how much they support me too. And that impacts me in a beautiful and positive way.

What kind of work do you do day-to-day with your clients?

I do community access and personal care.

This could include anything from cooking a recipe together, yoga, and tutoring, to taking my clients to their appointments, assisting them to get their morning routine done and even fun activities like watching a movie together, crafts, dancing, yoga and exercise.

What is one thing you like about working for Give a Care?

Give a Care, Cares. It’s as simple as that when you work for an honest company!
