Have you ever heard of the old saying “You’re as good as the company you keep?” I wholeheartedly believe this to be true, and I’ve made it my life goal to consistently surround myself with positive, kind and mindful human beings to better myself, so that I too can have the same effect on others.
My team at Give a Care are my kind of people, and our client’s kind of people too as it happens. So I want to share them with you!
Every month, we’ll introduce a different Give a Care employee and give you an insight into what gets them up in the morning, and a snippet of how they make an impact on myself and those around them.
So to kick it off, I’d like to introduce you to Marilyn – one of our dedicated Disability Support Workers who are the front line of GAC.
Jeff: We match our clients with Disability Support Workers based on a number of factors, tell us what it is that makes you a great fit for your clients?
Marilyn: We share several common interests and hobbies and really enjoy sharing our knowledge with each other and learning more together. Together we are enthusiastic about broadening our knowledge and our activities in the greater community and learning new skills.
Jeff: What are some of the highlights you’ve enjoyed sharing with your clients since working with GAC?
Marilyn: Getting to know them as individuals and in doing so, identifying goals and ambitions and supporting the client to achieve something that is very important to them. A highlight to me is watching their confidence, self-esteem and independence grow.
Jeff: What does a typical day look like as a DSW?
Marilyn: A typical day includes first and foremost, communication with the client and perhaps their family. Understanding what it is that they may wish to accomplish that day; including things like household chores, hobbies, sporting activities, shopping or social outings. And then supporting the client to undertake those goals in a way that is desirable to them.
Jeff: Lastly, what is the most rewarding part of being a GAC DSW?
Marilyn: It would definitely have to be empowering a client to live their life as they wish, as a member of a caring and positive team who work together with the client.
Thanks Marilyn! We love having you a part of our family and we know your clients do too.
Give a Care is a growing family of support workers like Marilyn and a wonderful Management team who not only have my back, but have our client’s best needs as their top priority. So I’m really proud to start introducing you to the team – who will be next?!
